I served on board from October 1966 to September 1968. I was in engineering and was assigned to Mike boat 1. Maynard LaFlex was 1 class in charge of all of us until he went to a Tug Boat. At that time I believe the 1 class Master at Arms Smith, was in charge until de-commissioned. I remember some in our group, please excuse spelling. Wingate, Eckler, Deihl, Waugaman, D.C.Curran, Childs. Looking to find picture album with many more names. Many great memories, such as cooking hot dogs in the coffee pot, C Rations and stale cigarettes, little sleep on boat runs. Boy, how the years have slipped by. I remember Lt. JG Herder. Thanks for reading. Ed Hein

I was aboard the Oglethorpe from Aug 47 to Oct 49. Went aboard as Fireman 2nd class, Water Tender striker. When I left I was YN3. Retired from the Navy in Oct 66 as YNC. I can remember a lot of the sailors and officers. Would greatly like to hear from my time aboard. I was 17 in August 1947.

I'm signing on behalf of my father, Lt. Hector M.Rivas M.D., who was ship's doctor about 1960- 62 likely during the Cuban missile crisis while we were living in Norfolk.
My father in his last days and hours vividly remembered his days aboard ship and his fellow ship mates, but like so many who have sailed before him to calmer seas, passed away in his sleep in Rockville, Maryland September 2016. I still have vivid memories of all the personnel in their crisp whites disembarking on the gangplank the cement dock in Norfolk in the very early 1960s. My dad would always bring us toy match box cars and pennants from his trips! Thank you to all hands that served on the Oglethorpe and were a part of his memories. Thank you all for your service to our country Sincerely, Former Marine Carlos (Carl) Rivas.
